Large Quilts

Mariner's Compass  -  made 1986 - 1988,  this is my first completed quilt.  I had quilted two quilt tops before and then decided I knew enough to make a quilt.  This is an adaptation from a Mountain Mist pattern.  Techniques used are machine pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted.   Quilt size is 78" x 93".
Floral Fanfare  -  made in 1991.   Quilt design is an adaptation from a quilt seen in a Sew Quilt magazine from 1990.  Techniques used are machine piecing, hand applique, and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 81" x 95"
Tee Quilt  -  made in 1992.  This quilt was seen as only a picture in a Ladies Circle Patchwork Quilt magazine and there was no pattern available.  This was my first experience in drafting a pattern.  Techniques used are machine pieced and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 85" x 85"
Once is Enough  -  made September 1992 - March 1994.  This quilt was my first attempt at hand applique.  I admired the Baltimore Album quilts that were being made at that time during the revival of the Baltimore Album quilts, purchased all the Elly Sienkiewicz books I could and taught myself the techniques needed to produce "my Baltimore".  Techniques used are hand appliqued, machine pieced, and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 84" x 84"
Nosegay Quilt  -  made in 1994.  This quilt was featured in the book "Soft Covers for Hard Times" by Merikay Waldvolgel, there was no pattern available so I drafted my design.  Techniques used are machine pieced and hand quilted.  Quilt  size is 81" x 97".
Scarecrow Quilt  -  pieced in January to August 1994,  quilted in December 1995 to March 1996.  This quilt is an adaptation from pattern in the book titled "Quilts for All Seasons" by Crystal Carter.  The blocks are 3" finished size log cabin blocks.  Techniques used are  machine pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 82" x 92".
Celtic Quilt  -  made in January 1995 to June 1996.  This quilt pattern is from the book "Celtic Designs" by Philomena Wiechec.  The choice of using the chosen colors are based on the Irish flag colors which are 'white, green, and orange' but the white was too bright so I chose to use the yellow background fabric.  Techniques used are hand appliqued, machine pieced, and hand quilted.  The quilting took 65 days, a total of 199 hours to quilt.  Quilt size is 83" x 105".
Fabled Flowers  -  made in January to August 1997.  This quilt is an adaptation from the book "Fabled Flowers" by Kimiko Sudo.  Techniques used are dimensional hand applique, machine pieced, and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 64" x 82".
Crossing Over Time  -  made February to July 1998.   This quilt is based from a 1997 quilt pattern from a Oxmoor House  calendar.   The border is different from the original pattern and found in a book published by Dover Books.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilting.  This quilt was made to honor my mentor, Ima Tennison, because without her guidance  I would not be the quilter I am today.  Quilt size is 77" x 94".
Burgoyne Surrounded  -  made in August 1998 to January 1999.   This is an adaptation of the traditional pattern, but my change was to use three colors instead of the normal two-color only quilt setting.  I went looking for a quilt pattern that would give me an area to fill with feather quilting and this quilt pattern fit the need.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilting.  Quilt size is 77" x 94".
Into My Garden  -  made in February to November 1999.   This was a block-of-the-month class I taught in 2000 at a local quilt shop.  Techniques used are machine piecing, hand applique and hand quilting.  Quilt size is 74" x 85".
Blackford's Beauty  -  made in March to July 2000.   This quilt was a mystery quilt that incorporated the Hoffman challenge of that year.  It has become one of the most popular quilts that I ever made and continues to be a much requested mystery quilt class.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 82" x 82".
Stained Glass Garden  -  appliqued December 1999 to July 2000, then quilted October to December 2000.   This quilt was a BOM offered by Quakertown Quilts in Friendswood in the fall of 1998, but I was not interested making the same quilt as everybody else.  I purchased the pattern in the fall of 1999 from a vendor and then proceeded to cut 3-1/2 yards of black fabric to make miles of 1/4" bias strips for the "leading" of the design.  Chose my own fabrics for the quilt and hand-stitched the bias leading in place.  Techniques used are hand applique and hand quilting.  Quilt size is 72" x 74" and remains one of my favorite quilts of all times.
Glorious Garden  - appliqued February to July 2001,  quilted January to February 2002.  This quilt is an adaptation from a quilt pattern given to me by my best friend (Bonnie Zaretki) as a birthday present.  Techniques used are hand applique and hand quilting.  Quilt size is 54" x 65".
Red Rose Sampler  -  made in January to November 2002.  This quilt setting is my original setting, but the applique blocks are from the quilt pattern "Rose Supreme Sampler" by Rosemary Mahkan from Canada.  Notice that by using two different yellow background fabrics and the choice of the setting of the blocks, there is a secondary pattern created.  Techniques used are machine pieced,  hand applique, and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 83" x 83".
No Weeds in this Garden  -  pieced in September 2001, quilted in September to December 2003.   This quilt design is an adaptation from a BOM project, I purchased the complete pattern set and then made change to the pattern based on the finished look that I wanted for my quilt.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilting that varied from each block.  This quilt was an experiment in trying different quilting motifs at each block to accentuate the piecework in each block.  Quilt size is 76" x 88".
Summer Romance  -  pieced in July to August 2002,  quilted in January 2004.  This quilt was a "mystery quilt by mail" by Glad Creations quilt shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  When I first received the fabrics I was not happy with the colored background fabric, so I set it aside and did not work on the quilt for two years, and then decided I paid a lot of money for the program so I needed to piece the quilt top.  Still did not like the finished top and again it sat for two years.  Then decided to have the quilt top machine quilted and collaborated with the quilter as to the quilting motifs I wanted and where I wanted them placed.  Every quilt show this quilt was entered it won blue ribbons - now it has become one of my favorites.  Techniques used are machine pieced and machine quilted.  Machine quilted by Kay Costner of Tyler, Texas.  Quilt size is 83" x 104".
Mohawk Trail  -  made January to November 2006.   This is a very old and traditional quilt design, but with a unique setting.  The block is based on a Drunkard's Path, but the setting is a 16-patch block. The quilting motifs consists of a curved cross-hatch design in the light background fabric.   There are 256 fan blocks, using 768 different fabrics, no repeats in the quilt.  Techniques used are machine piecing, machine applique with turned edge and decorative stitch on the applique edge, and hand quilted.  This quilt has won multiple awards for the hand quilting.  Quilt size is 83" x 83".
Mystery by the Bay  -  pieced January to July 2003 and quilted in July 2006.  This quilt is from a Debbie Caffery mystery quilt program.  Instead of doing the scrappy-look suggested in the instructions, I decided to stay with one color family,  this started my fascination with working in only 'one' color.  As you can see there are many greens (I did not keep track of how many) but they all work together - from the grass greens to the blue greens they "play well" together.  Techniques used are machine piecing and machine quilting.  Machine quilting by Pat Scott of Porter, Texas.  Quilt size is 83" x 104".
Old Red  -  pieced in April 2004, quilted in September 2006.   I became more interested in working in "one color" families to see how easy or difficult it might be to make a beautiful quilt.  What I found was that the more fabrics used, the easier it became to make the fabrics work together.  Red is my least favorite color, but this quilt ended up being the easiest one to gather the fabrics for, the collection ranged from true red to black-red, green red, orange red, and so on.  There were 78 different red fabrics used in this quilt.  Red toile fabric used as the 'light' background.  Techniques used are machine piecing and machine quilting.  Machine quilting by Pat Scott of Porter, Texas.  Quilt size is 72" x 72"
Chocolate Covered Cherries  -  block exchange in 2004,  pieced in November 2005,  quilted June 2007 to February 2008.  The string-pieced blocks were collected as a block exchange during 2004 with a monthly group of quilters.  The setting is based on a Log Cabin setting.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilted.  Quilt size is 81" x 81".
Rhapsody in Blue  -  pieced in September 2000,  machine quilted in October 2008.  Have always loved the look of a blue and white quilt, so I decided to make my own.  Then I was in-decisive about what quilting motifs needed to be placed on the quilt so it sat for a few years.  Then again, I collaborated with my favorite machine quilter.  Techniques used are machine piecing and machine quilting.  Machine quilting by Kay Costner of Tyler, Texas.  Quilt size is 81" x 97".
Pink Chocolate  -  made in January 2009 to January 2010.  Quilt pattern is adaptation from quilt pattern Fort Sumter by Red Crinoline Quilts.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilting.  This quilt has been awarded several awards for the hand quilting.  Quilt size is 80" x 80".
October Sky  -  pieced June to July 2008,  quilted in April 2011.   This is an adaptation from a pattern that had applique geese over the pieced fan blocks, I chose not to include the geese on my quilt.  Techniques used are machine piecing and machine quilted.  Machine quilting by Kay Costner of Tyler, Texas.  Quilt size is  82" x 97".
Farmer Wife's Garden  -   pieced January to July 2010,  quilted January to September 2012.  This quilt is an adaptation from quilt blocks from the "Farmer's Wife Sample" and the book "Around the Block".   My setting chosen for a square quilt and not a rectangle quilt meant more blocks were needed.  Techniques used are machine piecing and hand quilting.  This quilt has been awarded many hand quilting awards.  Quilt size is 89" x 89".
Melon Patch  -  pieced and appliqued January to April 2010,  quilted in September 2012.  This quilt is an adaptation from Kim Diehl's book "Simple Comforts", the original quilt was meant to be a lap-size quilt with small blocks, but I enlarged the blocks and made a bed-size quilt.  Techniques used are machine piecing, hand applique, and machine quilted.   The machine quilting was executed by JoLynn O'Neal of Santos, Texas.  Quilt size is 80" x 80".
Crooked Creek  -  pieced February to July 2014,  quilted in December 2014.  This quilt is from the book "Log Cabin Quilt Book" by Judy Martin.  There were over 3000 different fabrics used in the quilt.

Winter' Garden  -  pieced and appliqued in 2011,  machine quilted August to December 2014,  hand quilted February to April 2015.   This quilt was an adaptation from a quilt pattern by Sheila Wintle and was taught as a block of the month program.  Techniques used are machine piecing, hand applique, hand quilting, and machine quilting.  This was a collaboration of quilting between a hand quilter  and a long-arm quilter.  The machine quilting is in the block backgrounds and borders, then hand quilting was added to the applique elements.  Machine quilting executed by Vee Redden of Laneville, Texas and hand quilting by myself.  Quilt size is 73" x 72".
Cheddar Trails  -  pieced May to July 2013,  quilted December 2015 to February 2016.  This quilt is from a quilt pattern "Lancaster" from Red Crinoline Quilts.  Techniques used are machine piecing and machine quilting.  Machine quilting executed by Vee Redden of Laneville, Texas.  Quilt size is 83" x 91".
